The last few weeks I have been doing archive work in several archives. One in New Jersey and now I am in Chantilly, Virginia at the so called “History Factory” – fancy name.. They host the archive of the John Q. Adams Center for the History of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery and they have the only archive on the history of cochlear implants. This material will be used for a new book project. Next week I will stay in L.A. looking at documentation/promotion films done by the House Ear Institute.
This is permalink no. 700 and my second more non-news-style post, the first one is here. This time, some blurbs on the buzz word of this year. Many people wrote on that in the textual agencements of www. It is called “New Aesthetic” and even has a wikipedia entry. It was coined in March at the SXSW 2012 by James Bridle from London. There was even a (more…)
Next year I will work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute Design- and Art Research of the “Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst” HGK Basel and at the same time be a postdoctoral researcher at the “Seminar für Medienwissenschaft” University of Basel. At HGK I will write a grant application for a research project on practical applications in the realm of data aesthetics (sonification, visualization and tactilization) and at University of Basel I will start my research on the history and theory of biomedia (especially neuromedia such as the cochlear implant).
Meanwhile I organized a symposium at Akademie Schloss Solitude with the title “Rhythmanalysis” (with Wolfgang Schäffner, Mara Mills, Dietmar Maringer and others.) The documentations will be online next month.
After I worked on further experimentations (some videos here) with the detektor and conducted some workshops in Singapore, I talked some days later at the GfM (German Society for Media Studies) on financial markets and algo-trading. The next weekend I talked about mediated milieus or ecologies at Fachhochschule Potsdam. Meanwhile I could upload some videos from my Singapore-stay. (more…)
The Institute for Algorhythmics has been mentioned as part of an movement of younger artists, “who are interested in concrete sonic archaeologies of contemporary media” in an article by Garnet Hertz and Jussi Parikka with the title “Zombie Media: Circuit Bending Media Archaeology into an Art Method”, which was (more…)
In two days we will fly to Singapore and start the Art/Science Residency at National Univeristy of Singapore. There is already a blog installed for me and hopefully it will get filled with entires pretty soon. I will do workshops with the detektors listening to wirelessness of the urban environment of Singapore. Here some sounds I made in Berlin.
Today I will give as well a paper about the media archaeology of Packet Switching in Berlin at Denkerei. Here some more informations.
Detektors for Singapore (made by Martin Howse, 2012)
Now it is official. In Sept. 2012 Shintaro will stay the whole month in Singapore as a Art/Science Resident Fellow at National University of Singapore Interactive & Digital Media Institute (IDMI) working on the “Detektors“-project he started with Martin Howse. Here the official announcement by NUS. And here some infomations about the residents.
On 29th of February Shintaro defended successfully his PhD-Thesis at Philosophische Fakultät III of Humboldt University Berlin with a summa cum laude. Thanks to everybody, who helped doing the research. News about a possible publication will be posted here.
On 15th of Jan. Shintaro Miyazaki and Martin Howse had a conversation over skype, which was broadcast live on radio reboot.fm. Since live broadcasting is kind of full of unexpected things, which are sometimes funny, sometimes also a bit embarrassing I made a edited version of a recording of the live show.
On friday the 3rd of Febr. Shintaro will as well speak about Algorhythmic Catastrophes 2010|1990 at transmediale resource market. More infos here.
Much happend in the past months. Some new documentation material on algoRhythmic Sorting our epistemic software and computer music generator will be released soon. Shintaro started his residency fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude. From him we can as well expect a paper on the early computer music history. And guess what it will be about algorhythmics!! Here is a recording of some preview he gave on a symposium mentioned earlier (the talk about the early computer music is around -19:12 or 03:13.
Jussi Parikka mentioned the Institute for Algorhythmics in his keynote about “The Aesthetico-Technical Rhythm” at the Symposium: Rhythm & Event, Saturday 29 October 2011 at King’s Anatomy Theatre & Museum, King’s College London organized by Kingston University London (London Graduate School). Here is an abstract of the paper he gave.
Friedrich Kittler (1943-2011) died yesterday 18th of October in Berlin. Rest in peace dear great master. Jussi wrote an excellent text. Google will help to find more documents.
After a long break some news: Shintaro Miyazaki will take part at ISEA 2011 in Istanbul at a panel called “Matter with Media“. As well he contributed an essay for “Volume 28 – The Internet of Things” published by Archis, Amo and C-lab (p. 14-15). It was written for designers, architects and other “creatives” and is anything but an academic paper. There are no references and its style is very polemic. You can read a revised version by clicking..
Our little software AlgorhythmicSorting was redesigned and released also on windows. We changed the visualization, since we became aware, that not only the sounds, but also the visuals (diagrams) are important. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome. Click here for more.
The last two months were very quite busy for Institute for Algorhythmics. M.C and S.M were in Japan. Unfortunatley not together although. Michael Chinen played on the 15th of Sept. at “Berlin Night” in “Le Weekend” (Matsuyama, Japan), presented some of his works at SMRL, Tokyo Denki University, Sept. 7 and at CCA, Kita-kyushu, September 20. Shintaro Miyazaki had two gigs in Japan (26th of Sept. Itoshimacity, Studio Kura and 12th of Oct. Tokyo, Super-Deluxe). Akitoshi Honda had a (more…)
The summer is almost over in Berlin, but we were quite active these days. Shintaro Miyazaki went to Bisaccia, Italy (see pics above) to present Detektors, a project in collaboration with Martin Howse and which will be presented again at ISEA 2010 in Dortmund. Right after that the whole Institute presented for the first time together their works at a Festival called S.low. And on the 1st of August, Shintaro started a new open academic talk series called: “Oscillation Series. Sonic Theory and Practices”.
Institute for Algorhythmics will take part at Interferenze 2010 in Bisaccia (23.7-25.7) with a talk/presentation and with a performance. The performance is planned to be a session using coils and HF-detectors to sonify unhearable electromagnetic waves of our electronic devices (mobile phone, computer, camera, pocket translator), but also of our invisible infoscape (wifi, UMTS, GSM, bluetooth). The talk with the title “Transsonic Infoscapes” will explain the theoretical concepts behind the artistic practice. More here.
The algorhythmics of the different sorting algorithms are sonified in a better way now. The lower the seperator sound the deeper the recursion is (in case of merge sort or quick sort). Watch it in Fullscreen mode and in HD (only on vimeo.com).. !
AlgorhythmicSorting is an open source program and learning tool for people, who want to learn and analyze the diversity of sorting algorithms by hearing the different rhythmic behaviour of different sorting algorithms like bubble sort, merge sort, quick sort or heap sort and others. It shall be used by students, sound artists, researchers and hobbyists to learn the rhythmic basics of algorithms. More documentation is to follow.
Michael Chinen will perform a short set on 25th (Tue) of May at General Public, Schönhauser Allee 167c, Berlin. The next day he will also present his work at NK. I copy from their website:
Michael Takezo Chinen interests involve writing software in c and c++ to find similarities between computer processes and music, using themes such as hierarchy, synchronicity, and reference. Currently he is writing a suite of tools for the mac called the “fucking” series, which involves analyzing and sonifying the raw memory and processor state of everyday programs such as a web browser or text editor.
The Presentation at “Thinking Network Politics: Methods, Epistemology, Process” (25th of March) in Cambridge, UK was a succes and now I am preparing a presentation for Aarhus, Danemark (INTERWEAVING TECHNOLOGIES – THE AESTHETICS OF DIGITAL URBAN LIVING). The site www.sonicarcheology.net is still in progress, but looks better and better. We will annouce as soon it will be made public (it is already, but not promoted).
The text is a pre-version in progress. A final version of this paper is planned to be published as: »AlgoRHYTHMS Everywhere – a heuristic approach to everyday technologies«, in:Hoogstad, Jan Hein / Stougaard, Birgitte (Ed.): PLURALIZING RHYTHM: MUSIC, ARTS, POLITICS, Amsterdam/New York: Rodopi, 2011 (forthcoming)
We lately made our first contribution to radio called “algoRHYTHMIC noise of our everyday gadgets“, which consists of a study with short snippets of audio examples about audificated processes of our everyday gadgets like our cell phones, cameras, smart phones and laptops.
Auscultations no. 1 to 16 are made by using a electromagnetic coil, no. 17 to 19 are made by audification processes of assembly code on software side (formal materiality) and auscultations no. 20 to 23 are produced with a HF-detector.
Shintaro Miyazaki (Founder of Institute for Algorhythmics: Concepts & Direction) will talk on the 9th of March in Newcastle (UK) at “Creative Digital Media Research Practice: Production Through Exhibition” in New Castle. Title: Sonic Media Archeology and DIY-Practice. More here.
Due to the lack of attention we announce a finnisage of our little exhibition called “ubiquitous oscillations² or about rhythmic structures of media”. Date: Sunday 7th of Feb. from 1900 (7pm) until 2200.
There will be a performace: “AlgoRHYTHMIC Noise of our Everyday Gadgets” by Michael Chinen & Shintaro Miyazaki. It will be about the diverse sonic archeologies of our digital gadgets (either from the software side (Michael) or from the hardware side (Shintaro). Dont miss!
Place is here. Schönhauser Allee 167c, Berlin. Take U2, get off at “Senefelder Platz” north exit. Walk on the left side past the building site and see old house with white fluorescent lamp, which says “GENERAL PUBLIC”.
Tomorrow is the opening of the exhibition “ubiquitous oscillations² or about rhythmic structures of media” where Institute for Algorhythmics shows a new work called “2nd Order Diatoms”. Yesterday we finished the black box. Have a look. More impressions will follow after the opening tomorrow. Click more for pictures. More Infos about the project here. (more…)
We are preparing full power now the installation “2nd Order Diatoms” during CTM as a partner. Digging now with help of Michael Chinen and Akitoshi Honda into Random Walk, Modulo, C++, Servo Motors, Stochastics, Pitch Detection, Beat Detection etc. Team work is very efficient! Here is the press text. More news will follow. And apropos the project “Institute for Algorhythmics” got noticed.. At least a bit. Here (spanish) and Here (french).
Besides Akitoshi Honda our hardware guru we have now Michael Takezo Chinen, software and computer music specialist on board for the Institute for Algorhythmics. Michael orginally from Hawaii with japanese roots, studied Composition&Computer Science at University of Washington in Seattle, Electro-Acoustic Music in Dartmouth College and was Research Student at Tokyo Denki University.
